Our station is locally owned and operated, and all of our volunteers live, work and produce their shows in Knox County. We strive to enrich the local and online communities we serve by providing access to the airwaves, thoughtful programming and forums for expression and connection.
We represent a slice of Midcoast life, and a wide variety of experiences and viewpoints. We are unified in our effort to serve the community.
We appreciate, and attempt to live up to our responsibility as a public broadcast medium, with humility and integrity. We work to continue evolving and growing through our experience as a group and as individuals.
Our success is fueled by community involvement.
WRFR-LP is a low power FM radio station licensed by the FCC to serve the City of Rockland, Maine, and surrounding towns. Our construction permit was granted on March 19, 2001. The Station has been broadcasting 24/7 since Valentines Day, 2002. The station is licensed to Penobscot School, a non-profit center for language learning and international exchange in Rockland.
Penobscot School appoints the station manager and has established WRFR as an independent community radio station with a mission to serve and be open to everyone in its listening area.
WRFR is non-commercial and is operated entirely by volunteers. WRFR is the only radio station in Knox County that is owned and run by local people. Although there are six other radio stations transmitting from antennas in Knox County, WRFR's studio at 20 Gay Street in Rockland is the only radio station in the county that programs its own content.
WRFR's high fidelity stereo signal on 93.3 mHz covers the city of Rockland and can also be received in neighboring towns. In June of 2004 WRFR also began transmitting to Camden and its neighboring towns via a translator station on 99.3 mHz which is licensed to Camden's Community School.
WRFR is intended as a resource for everyone to help make our Rockland-Camden community a friendly, well informed, and creative place to live and work. Rockland's diverse tastes and interests are reflected in the wide variety of programs on WRFR. There are talk and call-in shows on many themes and from many points of view, plus Country, Blues, Rock, Hip Hop, Jazz and many other kinds of music. Tune in to 93.3 FM in Rockland or 99.3 FM in Camden and check it out! You might just like what you hear, and if not, check back again soon: its bound to be something entirely different.
WRFR is supported by local business sponsors, who we regularly acknowledge on the air. Please notice who they are and tell them how much you appreciate their support. We also rely on listener contributions, and your gifts are also much appreciated. Your check made out to WRFR and mailed to WRFR, 20 Gay Street, Rockland, ME 04841 will help us keep going. Contributions are tax deductable: WRFR is a part of Penobscot School, a tax exempt educational organization.
WRFR is entirely run by volunteers. It's a big job and we are eager for you to join us. Our goal is to be open to everyone, respect our listeners, and offer the best programming we can. The station is still young. To grow, WRFR needs people to host and produce shows, to report on local news, and to help with technical and administrative skills. To learn more, stop by the station, call, write, or come to one of our volunteer work sessions. We meet once a month at the station located at 20 Gay Street in Rockland (please contact the station manager for the next meeting date and time) and we are always happy when new people stop by.
